What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India’s most ambitious rooftop solar programme to date. With a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore, this scheme aims to:
- Install rooftop solar on 1 crore households across India
- Provide 300 units of free electricity per month to beneficiary families
- Generate 30 GW of solar capacity
- Create 17 lakh direct jobs in the solar sector
Who Can Apply?
The scheme is available to all residential electricity consumers in India. You qualify if:
- You are an Indian citizen with valid Aadhaar
- Your property has an existing electricity connection from DISCOM
- You have adequate roof space (minimum 10 sq m for 1 kW)
- Your roof is structurally sound and shadow-free for most of the day
- You use an MNRE-empanelled installer
Understanding the Subsidy Structure
The scheme provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) based on system size:

- Rajasthan: 40% state-level CFA for select categories
- Tamil Nadu: Concessional financing at 5% interest
- Uttar Pradesh: Additional ₹15,000 through state solar mission
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Register on the National Portal
Visit pmsuryagarh.gov.in and register with your:
- Mobile number (linked to Aadhaar)
- State and electricity distribution company
- Electricity consumer number
Step 2: Select a Vendor

Your vendor will conduct a site inspection and submit the installation design.
Step 3: DISCOM Approval
Your DISCOM reviews and approves the design. This typically takes 7–15 working days. Our team tracks this and follows up on your behalf.
Step 4: Installation
Once approved, your vendor installs the solar system (1–3 days for residential).
Step 5: Net Meter Application
After installation, your vendor applies for a net meter. DISCOM installs the net meter within 30 days of application.
Step 6: Subsidy Disbursement
After net meter installation, DISCOM generates a commissioning certificate. The subsidy amount is directly credited to your Aadhaar-linked bank account within 30 working days.
